In the third and final part of the Roberson Project's deep dive into Confederate degree honorees, we meet the last of the Confederates granted honorary degrees from the University of the South. The importance of the Lost Cause legacy at Sewanee still influenced which recipients were chosen for honorary degrees. Controversial figures were lauded by the University, including William Stewart Simkins, an unrepentant Klansman, and Edward McCrady Jr., who championed the intimidation and disenfranchisement of Black voters.
