"The outbreak of the War between the States found Robert Gibson a school-boy at Episcopal High School. When the approach of hostile forces closed this institution, he returned home, to continue his studies as he might, and to await, with the impatience of a high-spirited boy, the hour when he could bear arms...In the ten months that followed he saw the most active service and participated in a long list of heavy engagements, and surrendered with the shattered remnant of Lee's Army at Appomattox..."
