John Brockenbrough Newton
Doctor of Divinity 1896
A surgeon in the Confederate Army, Newton was made bishop coadjutor of Virginia in 1894. He received his honorary degree in 1896. His father was an enslaver and was recorded in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census as owning 119 people.
