James Steptoe Johnston
Doctor of Divinity 1888
Johnston was the son of a cotton plantation owner. During the Civil War, he climbed to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Confederate Army; he was held for a year as a prisoner of war by the U.S. Army. He was elected the first Episcopal Bishop of West Texas in 1904. Sewanee awarded Johnston a Doctor of Divinity degree in 1888.
