Francis Johnstone Murdoch

Doctor of Divinity 1890

The son of Irish immigrants who became farmers in North Carolina, Murdoch was in 1860 a cadet of the South Carolina Military Academy (later The Citadel). He initially supported the Confederacy by joining a North Carolina regiment, but soon returned to the Charleston academy, where he helped defend the city, rising to the rank of lieutenant.18 After the war, he studied for the Episcopal ministry, eventually serving as rector of St. Luke's Church, Salisbury, N.C., from 1872 until his death in 1909. A trustee of Sewanee, he received his honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1890.
