Robert Woodward Barnwell Elliott

Doctor of Divinity 1874

Elliott had been a Captain in the Confederate Army. In 1874, the same year he was awarded his honorary degree by the University of the South, Elliott was consecrated as Missionary Bishop of West Texas. Elliott's father, Stephen, was Sewanee's first Chancellor and a stalwart defender of slavery, secession, the Confederacy and, after its defeat, the perspective later named the "Lost Cause." Robert W.B. Elliott also served on the University's Board of Trustees.
